Lovely family dinner – does such exist?
Cooking for your family can be a food lovers nightmare. Two remarkably picky kids with moderate table manners just don´t quite fit to an idea of a tasty, joyful moment to wash off the work life frills from my shoulders. As I´m not French nor have I read the book ‘Bringing Up Bébé,’ a French-Influenced Guide by Pamela Druckerman the marvellous dishes I serve my children to enjoy backfire me every time. More for me? No, they are plated with ketchup when I get them back.
So, what can you do to get to sip your glass of wine while smiling from the heart to your offspring filling their tummies with your cookings? Instead of France, we use to reach out to Italia. All our favourite treats, not just talking about the wines, come from that boot shaped wonderland.
As you may already know - to me eating is more than food consumption - is communicating with your loved ones, friends, colleagues... Communicating makes world a better place. Adding a delicious Napolitan pizza (go and check Helsinki´s crown jewel viatribunali.fi), tagliatelle with crayfish, mushroom risotto or almost any cheese to a good conversation can make a big difference in your... life. I intended to write mood, but it´s not just that. Conversation around the table makes you contact. There´s eye contact. Smiles. Laughter. Stories. Moments that keep families together.
So back to our Italian family dinners. On it´s worst it´s heating up Spagetti Bolognese in the microwave. Some spice it up with ketchup, I´m more of a Parmesan kind of person. But it does it´s task - there´s time to sit down and have a minute for ourselves - together.
On it´s best it preparing a pizza from the scratch on a lazy, rainy Sunday. One cooks the tomato sauce, one bakes the dough. As the kids get a bit older, we´ll make this a contest: Who makes the best pizza sauce of 2020? I´m not going to give up on these family cooking moments any time soon, you know, as these are the moments that I cherish in my heart. They give me peace and happiness. And a reason to have a glass of wine already before dinner time.
